There’s a common belief that our core behavior and personality is formed before the age of eight years old. When we’re children, we learn quickly since we have not developed the ‘critical’ mind. As adults, that ‘critical mind’ keeps us using the patterns that we learned when we were children. We have the same fears, make the same cognitive mistakes, and even more telling, we have the same sense of worth.
There are two ways to change those out dated patterns. The first, and you’ve probably tried this one, is brute force. Pure willpower. We know that this rarely works, but we try, again, and again. Unfortunately, we seldom have lasting results. We all know someone that’s been on diet after diet after diet, and yet they bounce right back up to the same weight. This is because there is an internal image that the unconscious mind is fighting to get back to. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that the unconscious is fighting against us, quite the opposite. We’re fighting the unconscious pattern that has worked to protect us in the past. Even if that past was one instance when were children.
The second way to make lasting change is to reenter that child like state, that state where the critical mind is out of the way, and we can work directly with those beliefs and patterns that are no longer working.
This is hypnosis. Despite all the fancy definitions, and theories, and swinging watches.. hypnosis is essentially effecting change at the unconscious level.
